When patients come to me for Invisalign, or clear aligners, one of the questions I often get is:
“Why do you need to file down my teeth a little bit?”
This process is called IPR, short for interproximal reduction. It might sound a little intimidating, but I promise it’s a very simple, safe, and common step when we’re straightening teeth with clear aligners. Let me explain.
What Exactly Is IPR?
IPR is when we gently polish or reshape the contact areas between certain teeth. Think of it as making tiny adjustments so your teeth have just the right amount of space to move into alignment.
- How much is removed? Usually less than half a millimeter — thinner than a fingernail.
- Is it safe? Absolutely. Done correctly, it doesn’t damage your teeth or enamel.
- Does it hurt? Not at all. It feels more like a little polishing than drilling or cutting.
Why Do I Need IPR with Invisalign or Clear Braces?
Clear aligners like Invisalign work by gradually moving your teeth into their ideal position. But sometimes your teeth are crowded or slightly wider than the space available. That’s where IPR comes in.
Here are the main reasons I might recommend IPR:
- To create space – so teeth can move without extracting any teeth.
- To improve your bite – making sure your top and bottom teeth fit together properly.
- To make teeth look more natural – smoothing out uneven edges so your smile looks balanced.
- To prevent relapse – if we don’t create the right space, teeth might shift back over time.
Is IPR Permanent?
Yes — once we do IPR, that tiny bit of enamel won’t grow back. But it’s such a small, controlled amount that it doesn’t affect the health of your teeth. I also apply fluoride or polishing afterward to keep your enamel strong.
The Bottom Line
If you’re considering Invisalign, clear aligners, or clear braces, don’t be alarmed if your treatment plan includes IPR. It’s one of the many small steps that helps create the smile you’re looking for — straight, balanced, and healthy.
Every case is different, so I’ll let you know if IPR is needed for your teeth, and we’ll go over it together before we begin.
